A look back on last year's Collector Car Show, January 28, 29 2011

January 29, 2011 sure did arrive quickly. This year the weather really was cooperating with us.
The temperatures stayed in the low 70's all week with blue skies. What a week for a car show.
We received almost 500 car show entries and all but a few showed up. We had record breaking
crowds – probably over 3000 to 4000, and the porta potties were over crowded! The lines were
long at the bus loading stations, and the snack bar, but the kids at Sahuarita High School will
benefit from these crowds. All our profits go to scholarships and a grad car for a lucky senior that
stays all night at the graduation party at the high school.
Friday morning, January 28, a group of great volunteers arrived early to start stripping the field
and setting up tents for all the workers. We also had to re-invent the sound system, since
our long time sound person retired this year. There were a few glitches, but everything came
together pretty well. We also had a new DJ. He goes to a lot of car shows around the state and
really does a great job.
By noon we had all the equipment set up and arranged around the field
and went home or back to the hotel room to get ready for our BBQ on Friday evening.
We had a record breaking BBQ also, and the Elks Club rearranged the seating so more people
could attend. This worked out great and wasn't overly crowded.
On Saturday morning – the day of the show – cars started arriving at 7:30 and for the first time
were immediately able to enter the field. There was no frost delay!
By 10am the field was full
of beautiful cars. People came from all over the country to either look at cars or enter their cars.
We even had five guys from Obregon, Sonora Mexico bring up five cars. The liked the show so
much they want to come back next year and bring more cars.
There were so many spectators, that all the streets around the resort were full of cars, including
the over-flow parking lot that we arranged to be available. We had vans and a school bus for
transporting back and forth to the town of Tubac and from the parking lot, but the lines were still
long.
Thanks to all our great volunteers for a great show.
